Program Overview:

The UCLA Women in Engineering program (WE@UCLA) hosts a variety of activities that raise awareness of women’s experiences in engineering and computer science.  This program is open to all UCLA Samueli students, enrolled in the Spring 2026 quarter, who meet the eligibility requirements listed below.

In 2025, a series of wildfires caused extensive damage to residential neighborhoods in Southern California.  As communities begin the long process of rebuilding, government officials and engineers are not only asking how to replace what was lost, but how to rebuild in ways that reduce future risk and long-term environmental impact.WE have an opportunity to rethink conventional construction practices and prioritize resilient and sustainable infrastructure (RSI) as a foundation for recovery.

The WE@UCLA RSI Academy, led by Professor Henry Burton and the Burton Research Group (BRG), will provide hands-on technical and real-world problem-solving opportunities, focusing on the design, analysis, and construction of infrastructure systems essential for a resilient and sustainable future.

Participants will explore:

  • Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure
  • Spatial Data Analytics Using Python
  • Sustainable Construction
  • A team-based capstone project competition where each team must evaluate four structural systems (1| Conventional Woodframe Construction, 2| Reinforced Masonry Construction, 3| Rammed Earth Construction, and 4| Composite Panel Structural Systems Construction) and provide a clear, reasoned ranking of them for post-wildfire residential reconstruction

The academy includes a virtual orientation and four in-person sessions during the first four weeks of the Spring 2026 quarter.

Eligibility:

This program is open to all UCLA Samueli undergraduate students, enrolled during the Spring 2026 quarter, who meet the following criteria:

  • Class standing: undergraduate students in 3rd year, 4th year, or 5th year
  • Majors: Civil or Mechanical Engineering
  • Basic familiarity with Python or willingness to complete a short pre-academy tutorial that will be provided
  • Demonstrated interest in engineering for resilient and sustainable infrastructure
  • A laptop is required for each session

Application Details:

To be considered for the program, applicants must complete the application and submit a resume.  A committee of UCLA faculty, staff, and community partners will review the applications.
